About this calculator
Use this calculator to estimate the weight of flat plate and sheet for purchasing, transport, lifting and costing. Choose a material or enter your own density. The weight is simply volume × density, so the result is only as accurate as the dimensions and density you use.
Formula
m = L × W × t × ρ
L, W, t = length, width, thickness (m); ρ = density (kg/m³); m = mass (kg).
Quick rule for steel (ρ = 7850 kg/m³): plate weight per square metre = 7.85 × thickness in mm kg/m².
Worked example
A carbon steel plate 2000 mm × 1000 mm × 10 mm:
- Volume = 2.0 × 1.0 × 0.010 = 0.020 m³
- Weight = 0.020 × 7850 = 157 kg
- Check with the quick rule: 7.85 × 10 = 78.5 kg/m² × 2 m² = 157 kg ✓
Assumptions and limitations
- A solid rectangular plate at its nominal dimensions, with no holes, cut-outs, chequer pattern or coating.
- Densities are typical values for estimating. Your material certificate or supplier data may give a different value.
- Rolling tolerances on thickness can make real plates noticeably heavier or lighter than nominal.
Safety note
For lifting, always use the actual weight from the delivery documents or a weighing, plus suitable rigging margins. Do not rely on an estimate alone to select lifting equipment.
