Micrometer Least Count & Reading Calculator

Least count from pitch and thimble divisions, and a micrometer reading with zero error.

Inputs

Calculate from
Micrometer sleeve with a horizontal reference line and millimetre graduations, and the rotating thimble with numbered divisions next to it.05384036sleeve (barrel)thimblereference line
Read the last visible line on the sleeve (whole and half millimetres), then the thimble division on the reference line. One thimble division = pitch ÷ number of divisions (0.5 ÷ 50 = 0.01 mm). Diagram not to scale.

Distance the spindle moves per turn of the thimble: usually 0.5 mm (metric) or 0.025 in (40 TPI, inch).

Only on vernier micrometers (often 10). Leave empty otherwise.

Result

Least count
0.01
Value of one thimble division
0.01
Working
Thimble division = 0.5 ÷ 50 = 0.01 mm

Each thimble division is 0.01 mm; the micrometer reads to 0.01 mm.

About this calculator

A micrometer turns a precise screw into a length measurement. One full turn of the thimble moves the spindle by the thread pitch; the thimble is divided into equal parts, so each division represents a small fraction of the pitch. That fraction is the least count. Some micrometers add a vernier on the sleeve to read ten times finer. This calculator finds the least count and adds up a reading with zero-error correction.

Formula

Least count = pitch ÷ thimble divisions    (vernier micrometer: ÷ vernier divisions as well)

Reading = sleeve reading + (thimble division × LCthimble) + (vernier line × LC) − zero error

For a standard metric micrometer: 0.5 mm ÷ 50 = 0.01 mm. Inch micrometer: 0.025 in ÷ 25 = 0.001 in; with a 10-division vernier, 0.0001 in.

Worked example

  • Pitch 0.5 mm, 50 thimble divisions: least count = 0.01 mm.
  • Sleeve shows 7.5 mm, thimble line 38 on the reference line, zero error −0.02 mm: 7.5 + 38 × 0.01 − (−0.02) = 7.90 mm.
  • Inch vernier micrometer: 0.025 in ÷ 25 ÷ 10 = 0.0001 in.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Least count is the reading resolution only. Instrument accuracy (permissible errors) is stated by the maker or the applicable standard, and depends on calibration, anvil flatness, measuring force (use the ratchet) and temperature.
  • Zero error is checked with the faces closed (0–25 mm micrometers) or on a setting standard (larger sizes).
  • Digital micrometers display the reading directly; their resolution is stated on the instrument.
